Tell us about The Beginning!
Michael and I were in the same class in Med school but I didn’t know him very well. It was only after we finished med school we started to hang out more through common friends. I think our first date was pizza and we went to watch a movie, which turned out to be a terrible choice in movie but definitely memorable! It’s been 9 years since then. It’s hard to know if there was an exact moment of knowing whether Michael was “the one” but he is very caring. I would get a surprise delivery of mundane household items I didn’t know I needed or never got around to getting. He’s also good at planning unprompted weekend activities including our dog.
Tell us about the proposal.
He planned a weekend away for my birthday. He whisked me away to Mangawhai and booked us a remote cottage overlooking luscious rolling hills. It was a very good birthday – pancakes for breakfast, lunch by the beach, books and an outdoor bath. Before dinner we were sitting on the porch, listening to all the native birds singing – it was incredibly beautiful. After a while, he went to get something, which I thought was my birthday present but when I opened my eyes, he was down on one knee. The rest is a happy blur. We didn’t tell anyone that night – just kept it to ourselves.
What were you most looking forward to on the day?
Sharing our special day with our family and friends! My dad and Michael’s parents hadn’t yet met. Many family members are coming from overseas so we’re excited to see them too!
